NFL and RCF sign a MoU with IFFCO for the technology transfer for production of Nano Urea

NFL and RCF sign a MoU with IFFCO for the technology transfer for production of Nano Urea
Nano Urea can enhance farmer’s crop yields and save nitrogen to the extent of 50%, shows trials

The Nano-fertilizer holds great promise for application in plant nourishment because of its size-dependent qualities, high surface-volume ratio, and unique properties. Nano-fertilizers release plant nutrients in a controlled manner contributing to higher nutrient use efficiency.

Experimental trials of Nano Nitrogen (Nano urea developed by IFFCO) were undertaken during Rabi/Zaid 2019-20 through the National Agriculture Research System (NARS) at 7 ICAR research institute/state agricultural Universities on different crops like Paddy, Wheat, Mustard, Maize, Tomato, Cabbage, Cucumber, Capsicum, Onion etc. were found agronomically suitable indicating that nano nitrogen (Nano Urea) can enhance farmer’s crop yields beside nitrogen saving to the extent of 50%.

National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd   (RCF) PSUs of DoF signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Farmers Fertilizers Cooperative Ltd. (IFFCO) for the technology transfer for production of Nano Urea.

IFFCO has sought permission from the Department of Fertilizers for export   of Nano Urea (liquid) manufactured from its Nano Fertilizer Plant facility set up at Kalol, Gujarat.

About Nano Urea

Nano Urea (Liquid) contains nanoscale nitrogen particles which have more surface area (10,000 times over 1 mm Urea prill) and a number of particles (55,000 nitrogen particles over 1 mm Urea prill).which makes it more impactful. In comparison to Urea the uptake efficiency of Nano Urea is more than 80 %. It is thus, required in lesser measure compared to the conventional urea fertiliser to fulfil plant’s nitrogen requirement. All India efficacy trials have been conducted on 20 ICAR research institutes and State Agricultural Universities on 43 crops. At all India level 11,000 farmer field trials on 90 crops have been undertaken in supervision of Krishi Vigyan Kendras. It has been recorded in the trials that Nano Urea (liquid) increases crop productivity and can reduce the requirement of conventional Urea by 50%. Further, application of nano urea (liquid) improves yield, biomass, soil health and nutritional quality of the produce.

Nano Urea (liquid) has been tested for biosafety and toxicity as per the guidelines of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India and OECD international guidelines. Nano Urea (liquid) is completely safe for human, animals, birds, rhizosphere organisms and environment at the recommended levels of application. Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, DAC & FW, Government of India, has notified IFFCO Nano Urea (Liquid) as a nanofertilizer under the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO).

This information was given by the Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
